According to James Cameron, the financial success of Avatar 2: The Way of Water will determine the fate of sequels.

It was previously announced that James Cameron was working on Avatar 3, 4, and 5 at the same time.

Avatar 2: The Way of Water, directed by James Cameron, should be one of the most anticipated films of the year. The sequel to the 2009 sci-fi film is set for a worldwide theatrical release on December 16, 2022.

James Cameron took a decade-long hiatus from filmmaking to work on the Avatar sequels, which have a runtime of three hours and ten minutes, which is 30 minutes longer than the original film. It was previously announced that James Cameron was working on Avatar 3, 4, and 5 at the same time.

According to reports, James will closely monitor the sequel’s financial success, which will determine the Avatar franchise’s future. “The market could be telling us we’re done in three months, or we could be semi-done, meaning: ‘OK, let’s finish the story within movie three, and not go on forever,'” James said in an interview with Total Film.

“Even now, we live in a different world than when I wrote this. The pandemic and streaming are a one-two punch. Alternatively, we could remind people what going to the theatre is all about. That is exactly what this film does. The question is, how many people care now?” Deadline quoted the director as saying.

“The Avatar films are kind of all-consuming.” I’m also working on some other projects that are very exciting. I think, eventually — I’m not sure if it’ll be after three or four years — I’ll want to pass the baton to a director I trust to take over so I can do some other things that interest me. Or perhaps not. “I’m not sure,” Cameron previously told Empire magazine.
