The Malayalam film industry hit of 2018 has nearly completed its theatrical run, spanning six weeks, and has amassed a remarkable worldwide box office collection of Rs. 176 crores.
- 2018 is the highest-grossing film ever from Mollywood India, overseas and worldwide
- First ever Rs. 100 crores grossing Mollywood film in India & Rs. 150 crores worldwide
The Malayalam film industry hit of 2018 has nearly completed its theatrical run after six weeks, with the film’s earnings reaching approximately Rs. 1 crore in its sixth week. The total collection in India stands at Rs. 107 crores, while it has garnered an additional Rs. 69 crores internationally, resulting in a worldwide box office total of Rs. 176 crores. Although the film is still being screened in a few centers, it is expected to add only about one crore more to its overall earnings.
In Kerala, the film falls just short of the Rs. 90 crore mark. Initially, there were high hopes of it reaching the coveted milestone of Rs. 100 crores. However, the movie experienced a significant decline when the decision to release it digitally was announced in the fourth week. Following the digital release on June 7th, it was swiftly taken down from most theaters as per the norms of the local exhibitors association, which prohibits films from being simultaneously exhibited in theaters and released digitally. There was some anticipation that an exception might be made for this film, but unfortunately, that did not happen, resulting in a substantial loss of potential revenue. There was also a proposal to delay the digital release, which could have been a beneficial decision for all parties involved, but the digital platform rejected that suggestion.
The box office collections of 2018 at the Indian box office are as follows:
Week One – Rs. 28.40 crores
Week Two – Rs. 32.80 crores
Week Three – Rs. 20.50 crores
Week Four – Rs. 17.70 crores
Week Five – Rs. 6.60 crores
Week Six – Rs. 1 crore
Total – Rs. 107 crores

Notably, it became the highest-grossing Mollywood film domestically, overseas, and worldwide, dethroning the long-standing record holder, “Pulimurugan,” which held these titles for seven years. “2018” also set several new milestones, including being the first Mollywood film to gross over Rs. 100 crore in India and exceeding Rs. 150 crore worldwide.
