The 18th World Athletics Championships are being held in Oregon, USA. 22 players from India have participated in this tournament. Neeraj Chopra from Haryana, India participated in the men’s javelin event. As he won the gold medal in Tokyo Olympics, there was a lot of expectation on him.
Neeraj Chopra did well in the javelin final. He threw the javelin with a distance of 88.13 meters, finishing second. With this he has won a silver medal and created a record. Defending champion Anderson Peters from Grenada topped the same category and won the gold. He threw the javelin at a distance of 90.54 meters and created a record. Jakub Vadlejch of Czech Republic threw 88.09 meters to clinch the bronze.
So far, India has won a medal only once in the World Athletics Championships. In 2003, Indian athlete Anju Bobby George won a Bronze medal in the long jump event held in Paris, France. Since then, no Indian has ever won a medal at the World Athletics Championships. After 19 years, Neeraj Chopra won the silver medal.
