Oh My Dog movie review: A watchable fable for kids and grown-ups

Oh My Dog is a Tamil Movie, Written and Directed by Sarov Shanmugam. Produced by Suriya and Jyothika under the banner 2D Entertainment. Released in OTT an Amazon Prime Original. Oh My Dog features Arun Vijay and his son Arnav Vijay in lead roles. Vijay Kumar, Mahima Nambiar and Vinay Rai in Supporting roles. Music Director Nivas.K Prasanna composes music for this movie. Gopinath.S handles the cinematography.

Director Sarov Shanmugam has created this story for children with what they like in mind. The film manages to entertain as well as inform, with no unnecessary grandeur.

Oh My Dog begins with Fernanado(Vinay Rai), a rich dog owner, who breeds the best of dogs. His dogs have been consistently winning international dog shows and he is just one win away from creating a world record. One day, he decides to kill a puppy as it was born with blindness. The puppy escapes. Little Arjun(Arnav Vijay) finds him and raises him.

Arun Vijay is an ordinary middle class man living in Ooty. He lives a simple life with his wife Mahima Nambiar, son Arnav Vijay and father Vijayakumar. He borrows some money for his son Arnav’s education and sends him to an international school. One day, Arnav picks up a blind dog and starts raising it under the name ”Simba”. Simba thrives on Arnav’s training. Arnav brings the vision to Simba and makes the dog to attend the exhibition. Vinay, who is rich when he goes to compete at the national level, causes some problems for Simba in order for his dog to win. Whether Simba won the competition or not, tells the rest of the story of the film.

It’s the Debut film of child star Arnav Vijay. In his first film, he has acted beyond the level what can be said. He proved to be the heir of the art family. A character who can express a variety of emotions such as anger, affection, cunning, and hope that come to boys at that age. He has managed everything easily and acted naturally.

Arun Vijay as Arnav’s father. A character who is not of great importance. Although he has acted with generosity since it was his son’s debut film. Mahima relied on Arnav’s mother. Affectionate mother imprinted on available footage. As Arnav’s grandfather, Vijayakumar portrays the middle-class grandfather as such. Vinay plays the role of a villain.

Arnav Vijay delivered a neat performance and his bonding with Simba makes the film more enjoyable. Some songs with English lyrics for kids of this period was seen in Nivas.K.Prasanna’s music. Gopinath’s cinematography captures the beauty of Ooty intact. Meghanathan has done the editing without any unnecessary scenes.

A simple film without big twists and turns. The director has said through Arnav’s character and through Simba that anything can be achieved by faith. Kids and dog lovers alike.
