Pathaan Movie Review : Pathaan, an ambitious action thriller that plays to the crowd and lives up to the expectations, is somewhat of an event movie since it marks Shah Rukh Khan’s return to the big screen after a long absence of four years. Pathaan is a far-fetched piece of literature that is strong in star power and style but feels more like a filmic Mountain Dew ad that slowly but surely finds its feet.
A Pakistani commander wants India to pay for this “error,” and the story follows India’s withdrawal of article 370 (the special status of Jammu and Kashmir) and how it affects him. He extends an olive branch to the imposing Jim, an ex-RAW agent who was abused by his own people. He is accompanied by his seductive partner Rubai, a former ISI operative played by Deepika Padukone, who has murky motivations. As they cross continents and engage in a risky game of treachery and retaliation, Pathaan, Jim, and Rubina lock horns and exchange sharp glances. The three compete to obliterate and defend the worlds they hold dear.
Siddharth Anand’s spy thriller receives an excessive makeover. He approaches it more like a superhero movie that requires a great deal of suspension of disbelief. Here, it is clear that he is fascinated by and worships popular Hollywood blockbusters like the Mission Impossible films starring Tom Cruise or the Marvel movies. Expect a wingsuit a la Falcon, heightened action and chase scenes, death-defying stunts on cars, bikes, ice, and helicopters, timeless heroes and villains mouthing sharp speech, a femme fatale, and it’s all infused with the notion of patriotism.
Given SRK’s supremacy in that realm and the fact that action predominates for a large portion of the movie, it’s intriguing how he lets his body speak here along with those intensely expressive eyes. His presence saves a mediocre storyline and poor visual effects. The background music doesn’t sound in tune with the scenes, but the title music does a good job of capturing the bravery and courage on exhibit.
The best part of the movie, though, is John Abraham’s excellent Jim performance. John is great and presents a classic example of the villain occasionally overshadowing the hero, whether it be with his Bane-like masked entrance or the stunt sequences. Although Deepika Padukone is a badass and is flawlessly cast, their chemistry is underwhelming and undeveloped. It doesn’t have the same energy that John-characters SRK’s do. Once more pulling a Tenet, Dimple Kapadia gives the proceedings the necessary seriousness and emotional weight. You wish other characters had the same level of genuineness she did.
For a true whistle moment, Karan and Arjun are reunited in the YRF espionage universe. If you can get over words like “You are fairly screwed,” Pathaan has everything you need for a masala potboiler: slow-motion entry, a classic good against evil conflict, and most crucially, a seductive, smouldering Shah Rukh Khan who can uphold morality both on and off-screen.

An event film of sorts, since it marks Shah Rukh Khan’s return to the big screen after four long years, Pathaan is an ambitious action thriller that plays to the gallery and lives up to the hype. Far fetched in writing but high on star power and style, Pathaan feels more like a filmy Mountain Dew commercial which slowly but steadily finds its footing.If you are willing to overlook the frivolity in dialogues like ‘You are pretty screwed’, Pathaan has all the ingredients of a masala potboiler — slowmo entries, iconic battle of good versus bad and most importantly a sexy-smouldering Shah Rukh Khan, who can fight the good fight on and off the screen.

Only if looks could’ve killed, this film could’ve been a better killer. It suffers from ‘War’ syndrome, but not as worse. This spy thriller has some spy & some thrills but are they enough? Yes, and no. Yes, for they’re enough to keep you intrigued for a while but no they’re not as smart as you’d expect them to be. Siddharth Anand keeps style up & high on the priority list hence hampering the story side of the film which has usually been his weakness. If War is the benchmark, this touches that safely

Director Siddharth Anand, who’s best known for glamorising his stars and presenting them in what sometimes look like lavish set pieces inspired by Hollywood films, Pathaan is no departure from his signature style. If anything, it is a reminder of his previous work – the bromance laden War and the Mr and Mrs Smith desi tribute called Bang Bang ! Here, Anand serenades the audiences with scenes and imagery that is a direct tribute to some iconic Hollywood films.Pathaan is unapologetically fun. It isn’t trying to send a public service message or pass a commentary on the current state of affairs. Instead, it sets the clock back to a time when a Shah Rukh Khan film at the cinemas was a moment to rejoice.
