Release date for Kantara OTT: Film takes finally planned for the first tim on OTT?

On the internet, “Kantara on OTT” has become a hot topic for which many people are looking for information. The movie’s OTT premiere appeared to be almost set in stone at the time of its release on September 30 because the creators had already decided on a digital partner and a potential release. However, the movie’s record-breaking box office success changed everything, and thanks to a tweet from executive producer and head of KRG Studios Karthik Gowda, the scheduled/rumored release date of November 4 was quickly ruled out. This would then spark a fresh round of rumours, with most reports speculating that new dates for “OTT releases” would emerge.

However, the creators have not yet demonstrated any desire to talk about the issue or reveal any information about their ongoing internal discussions. Given that Kantara has made over Rs. 300 crores worldwide and that the Hindi and Telugu versions are still performing well, one might assume that the theatrical run will likely be extended. However, based on the paths taken by major blockbusters like RRR, Brahmastra, and a few others, it appears that the 8-week gap between theatrical and OTT releases is the accepted practise.

On March 24, 2022, RRR was released in theatres all over the world. Despite its enormous box office success, the film’s creators decided to release it on Netflix exactly eight weeks later, on May 20. The Ram Charan-Jr. NTR-starring film went on to become the only one in the history of the streaming giant to trend for 14 weeks nonstop in both English and Non-English categories, serving as a just reward. The 8-week rule is further explained in Ayan Mukerji’s Brahmastra, which debuts on Disney+ Hotstar on November 4.

The original Kannada version of Kantara recorded less than Rs. 1 crore in a day for the first time since its release, which caused the movie to experience its first significant decline in box office receipts. On November 2, the movie experienced a staggering 40% drop in ticket sales, with the Kantara Kannada managing to bring in only Rs. 0.91 crores that day and Rs. 0.76 crores the following day. Although Kantara Hindi and Kantara Telugu have managed to survive and even outperform the Kannada version, it may be time for the producers to finish their OTT landing now that mid-week sales have started to decline.

On September 30, Kantara was released in theatres, and it is currently showing in five different languages all over the world. Only KGF 2 by Rishab Shetty is the second Kannada movie in history to earn more than Rs. 50 crores (net) after being dubbed in Hindi.
