SS Rajamouli’s RRR has already surpassed JPY 1 billion at the box office in Japan.

The first Indian movie to reach this milestone is RRR. At JPY 400 million, Muthu previously held the record for highest-grossing Indian movie in Japan for more than 20 years.

Today will mark the JPY 1 billion mark for RRR, the SS Rajamouli-directed epic starring Ram Charan and NTR Junior, in Japan. In fact, it has happened by the time you are reading this. On its 122nd day of release, the movie surpassed this remarkable threshold. It is the first Indian movie to ever reach this milestone in the nation. At JPY 400 million, Muthu previously held the record for highest-grossing Indian movie in Japan for more than 20 years.

RRR, which was first released in October of last year, has continuously maintained its box office performance for weeks on end. Most lately, however, it has seen a significant increase in its revenues as a result of the hype that the awards season has created. Remarkably, the movie’s box office performance has improved significantly over the past four weeks, even outpacing that of its first week.

RRR nominated for the Japanese Academy Awards

Speaking of nominations, RRR has joined Hollywood movies like Top Gun: Maverick, Spider-man: No Way Home, Avatar: The Way of Water, and CODA in the prestigious “Best Foreign Language Film” category at the 46th Japan Academy Film Award. Should it receive this honour, it may increase the movie’s market appeal and increase its box office earnings. March 10th is the scheduled day for the winners to be announced.

It has been months since RRR’s release, yet it is still impossible to forecast how well it will perform at the box office. This is a hallmark of the Japanese market, where movies frequently have lengthy theatrical runs. The movie is still doing well, and in its thirtieth week, its decline should be less than 30%. The movie will make another 150–200 million yen if these holds persist. But, it is difficult to predict how much higher it may go, so it is advisable to take a seat and take in the current box office.

RRR closing on KGF 2 worldwide

With a total of Rs. 1173 crores so far and a current deficit of Rs. 15 crores, RRR has likewise been inching closer to KGF: Chapter 2’s global gross. The movie has a decent possibility of winning an Oscar for Best Song, which might create a box office spike in Western countries if it is re-released there and complete the job. At this moment, it appears like the Japanese market alone might be sufficient in bridging the gap.
