England and India to meet in inaugural U19 Women’s T20 World Cup final
The first Women’s U19 T20 World Cup has just one match left after two weeks of play including 16 national teams, with the championship match set for 13:45 local time on Sunday in Potchefstroom.
India secured one of the last spots with their outstanding performance against New Zealand in the first semi-final on Friday.
And in the second semifinal, England prevailed against Australia in a nail-biter to advance to Sunday’s championship game.
Parshavi Chopra and Shweta Sehrawat led India to a convincing victory against New Zealand in the first semi-final. The Women in Blue’s choice to field paid off, as the New Zealand openers were dismissed by Mannat Kashyap (1/21) and Titas Sadhu (1/17) inside the first three overs. Izzy Gaze, a Kiwi goalkeeper who entered the match at 5/2, immediately launched a counterattack in response, but it was ineffective since Parshavi Chopra (3/20) eliminated Gaze just as the White Ferns appeared to be gaining momentum.
India’s openers added a rapid 33 runs in 3.2 overs as a response, igniting the chase. Shweta Sehrawat (61* from 45) took over when skipper Verma was dismissed (10 from 9), and she guided the Indian team to the Final.
The English team won the toss and elected to bat, but their top order crashed to 45/7 in the first 10 overs. Ella Hayward picked up two wickets in the sixth over, while Sianna Ginger added two more in the ninth over. However, Alexa Stonehouse (25), and Josie Groves’ strong teamwork allowed the English team to raise their score to 99. (15).
Thanks to two early wickets, the English were dominating in the reply. Claire Moore (20), Hayward (16), and Amy Smith (26), however, significantly reduced the objective.
After England’s bowlers took three wickets in seven deliveries, Australia was in danger at 59/7. Emma Wilson and Milly Illingworth made an effort to lead the Australians to victory, but the English fielders cheered after skipper Scrivens’ strike.
