Suryanarayana (Sathyaraj) is the judge anyone wants because he was a man who sympathized with the plight of the people in his court, even though his hands were bound by the law. An unfortunate incident took him to retirement. Years later his son Lucky (Gopichand) wears a black coat and returns to the same place his father swore to. His father believes he is a philanthropic lawyer and he will fight for the victims. When Vivek (Rao Ramesh), a business tycoon, steps into the picture, a retired judge returns to court to confront his son.
In this film, Rashi Khanna plays the character of a lawyer and also plays a popular TV actress named Jhansi. The opening sequence of the film may have some substance but it is confusing – A song, a dance, a fight, a few jokes, a punchy dialogue. There is no rhyme or rhythm in the way the film progresses. You wonder if there’s a coherent screenplay somewhere in sight. Some of the dialogue is self-aware of what kind of movie this is. Almost mirroring the audience’s thoughts, but they managed to make it funnier a bit.
The background score of the film was done by Jakes Bejoy. The music does not retain your interest, as does the story of the film. But that too is placed differently.
The Pakka commercial is driven solely by the intense performances of Gopichand, Rashi Khanna, Sathyaraj, and Rao Ramesh. Despite the contradictions, they seem to give everything to their characters. Gopichand shines in both comedy and action scenes, while Rashi Khanna comes to life as an arrogant TV actress. Despite the shortcomings, Maruthi is trying to inject some freshness into operations. The way Sathyaraj’s character gets a dream scene or how Rashi’s character believes in saying certain things better through a duet, so some other things. Unfortunately, they are not enough to work the whole picture.
Maruthi has delivered great films, characters, and stories in the past. Pakka Commercial is not really his best work. But if you are a fan of his or the lead actors give the film a chance. But Don’t expect too much.
