‘Iravin Nizhal’ movie review: R Parthiban’s breathtaking single-shot film is a remarkable technical achievement. Why need to watch ‘Iravin Nizhal’ in theatres

  • Parthiban’s never-before attempt
  • AR Rahman’s music
  • Strong star cast
  • Efforts behind the making
  • Praise from leading stars

Cinema makes you laugh and think. The film Iravin Nizhal is the new work of Parthiban who has set a new path by studying thought-provoking cinema. For the first time in the world, he directed a single shot non-linear film and made his film a lesson in the history of cinema.

Fifty year old Nandhu (Parthiban) is a cinema financier. The director who took money from him on interest, Unable to repay it. He commits suicide with his wife. The death became the talk of the media. Believing Nandhu to be the cause of the director’s suicide, his wife and daughter hate him and leave the house and disappear. The police chase to arrest financier Nandhu.

Grabbing his pistol, Nandhu takes refuge in a once-popular, now disgusting, bushy ashram that is all too familiar to him. From there, he begins to narrate his life story to the media, as recorded in ‘audio’ on his smart phone.

The story begins in 1971. We are introduced to Nandhu as a six month old child trying to drink milk from the corpse of his mother, who was murdered by her husband and lying in a pool of blood. The story narrates how he became a replica of the night and how far his shadow chased him. Iravin Nizhal with Non Linear screenplay is captured in a single shot. From the very first moment to the last moment of the story, ending as a mesmerizing screen experience on the screen. Director Parthiban can be praised for believing that such a single shot film can be made like this.

The first 30 minutes of the film showcases, “making of” footage detailing how the crew shot this “one hour and 36 minute” single shot film is a Hollywood testament to imagination and technical mastery. Nandhu travels from Chennai to Andhra Pradesh and from Andhra Pradesh back to Chennai and the characters who come and go in his life and the marginal life they face Old Nandhu.
Newcomer artists like 30 year old Anantha Krishnan as Nandhu and Brigada Saga as Chilakamma are captivating.

A.R. Rahman music says that he can transport the audience from one scene to another with music, and he has done a magic in this film through his music. Famous cinematographer Arthur Wilson and his team, who have shot for many films including Avan Ivan, Anbe Shivam, Naan Kadavul witness such a work of art in front of our eyes. Director Parthiban is leading the team in the right way.

The film runs only for 96 mins in a single shot. For that one 96-minute single shot, he has acted and directed 23 times of 96 minutes. Not only him, but also all the actors who have acted in the film, have done the same work for the art of cinema, which is definitely appreciated.
