The first of two parts of Mani Ratnam’s monumental historical epic “Ponniyin Selvan” was released in theatres last September. The much-anticipated movie ended up becoming the best-grossing Tamil movie of the year, and viewers loved it. The release date for “Ponniyin Selvan 2” has been set, according to a surprising revelation by the film’s creators. The creators of the picture warned other directors not to compete with it at the box office, therefore the return of the Cholas was announced well in advance.
On April 28, “Ponniyin Selvan 2” will be released simultaneously in a number of languages, much like the previous part. However, the sequel will have a grander opening than “Ponniyin Selvan” and will be the movie that unravels the web that the first movie created.
Based on the late Kalki Krishnamoorthy’s work of the same name, “Ponniyin Selvan” describes the historical era of the Chola monarchy. The first installment was made over Rs 500 crore at the box office, and the producers donated a portion of the proceeds to the trust established in memory of the late author Kalki Krishnamoorthy to commemorate the renowned author for the book.
With music by by AR Rahman, the movie stars Jayam Ravi, Vikram, Karthi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha, Sarathkumar, Prakash Raj, Jayaram, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Shobita, Parthiban, and Vikram Prabhu among others in pivotal parts.
