Ponniyin Selvan 1 also known as PS-1 is a Tamil-language epic historical fiction film directed and co-produced by Mani Ratnam, under his production studio Madras Talkies, along with Allirajah Subaskaran under the banner Lyca Productions. It is the first of two cinematic parts based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s 1955 novel Ponniyin Selvan. The film is written by Ratnam along with Elango Kumaravel and B. Jeyamohan. It stars Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha, Jayaram, Sobhita Dhulipala, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Vikram Prabhu and Ashwin Kakumanu while R. Sarathkumar, R. Parthiban, Prabhu, Prakash Raj and Rahman appear in supporting roles. The film’s music is composed by A. R. Rahman. Cinematography handled by Ravi Varman. Editing done by A. Sreekar Prasad. Production design by Thota Tharani respectively. It has been taken in two parts. The first part of the film will be releasing on 30 September 2022.
Fans are waiting to see if the film will be released in Tamil as a response to the blockbuster Pan-India films released in Telugu and Kannada.
It has been reported that Amazon Prime OTT has acquired the rights for the two parts of the film Ponniyin Selvan for Rs.125 crore. The film has been made on a budget of around Rs.500 crore and will be the pride of Tamil cinema only if it crosses Rs.1000 crore mark.
Mani Ratnam’s last release is Chekka Chivantha Vaanam. After that he is only working for ”Ponniyin Selvan”. If Mani Ratnam’s touch is there for Ponniyin Selvan it will be easy to collect Rs.1000 crore.
