Additionally, Virat Kohli broke Sachin Tendulkar’s ODI record for most century versus Sri Lanka.
In the first of a three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka on Tuesday, Virat Kohli made his return to the Indian ODI team with yet another brilliant century. It was Kohli’s 73rd international century and 45th in ODI play.
With this century, Kohli equaled Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 20 ODI tonnes at home, achieving another ODI milestone. Kohli accomplished the feat in 101 games as opposed to 164 for Tendulkar.
Additionally, Kohli broke Sachin Tendulkar’s ODI record for most century versus Sri Lanka. Tendulkar has eight accomplishments to his name, while Kohli has reached nine.
Earlier, during India’s visit of Bangladesh, Kohli finally scored a century in an ODI. The third hitter went 1214 days without scoring a century. When he last hit an ODI century, the former captain of India had left batting icon Ricky Ponting in the dust.
Tendulkar’s record for the most hundreds in the format is currently held by Kohli, who has just five ODI centuries to go. Tendulkar scored 49 ODI hundreds during his career, compared to Kohli’s 45 ODI centuries.
Given that India’s ODI schedule is jam-packed with 15 games (excluding the Asia Cup) during a 10-month period leading up to the World Cup in October-November, Kohli is certain to set more ODI records.
As he needs 180 more runs to go into the top 5 all-time ODI run scorers, Kohli has the opportunity to shatter yet another record. In the elite ranking, Kohli is just behind Tendulkar, Sangakkara, Ponting, Jayasuriya, and Jayawardene.
