Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday suggested that people from different states should communicate in Hindi rather than English. Speaking at the 37th session of the Parliamentary Business Language Committee, Shah said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has decided that the ruling media is the official language. This will definitely increase the importance of Hindi, according to a statement issued by the Union Home Ministry.
He told the members that 70 per cent of the agenda of the cabinet was prepared in Hindi. Shah said it was time to make Hindi, the official language, an integral part of the country’s unity. Shah, however, made it clear that Hindi should be accepted as an alternative to English, not local languages. He also suggested that Hindi should be made more flexible by adopting words from other local languages.
The Home Minister said that when citizens of different language-speaking states communicate with each other, it should be “in the Indian language”. In 2019, in his first speech on Hindi Diwas, he put forward the idea of ”one country, one language”. Then he said, “India is a multi-lingual country. Each language has its own significance. But it is absolutely necessary for the whole country to have a language that will become the symbol of the nation in the world. If there is any language that can tie the whole country together in one thread, it is the most widely spoken Hindi language.
Opposition parties have strongly condemned the report.
The CPI (M) calls it an attack on the fundamental principles of India’s diversity.
Congress leader Rajiv Gowda reminded the BJP that Article 29 of the Constitution respects many languages.
According to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K.Stalin, a single language does not help unity. He said it was an act of disruption to Indian unity.
Amidst the Hindi language controversy, A.R.Rahman has posted Tamizhanange song where zhagaram(ழ) stayed.
“தமிழணங்கு – இன்பத் தமிழ் எங்கள் உரிமைச்செம் பயிருக்கு நேர்”
People voice:
India is a multi-lingual, multi-ethnic country. For each state, there is a state language. English, which was left by the British, has been the link language for so many years. English is the official language and the language that connects people of all ways of life.
Mr.Amit Shah sir,
Now, Why you are imposing Hindi instead of English?
Does the Constitution of India says that one should speak only in Hindi?
You know how to speak Hindi. Why do all the people of the country have to speak in Hindi for that?
As per Articles 344(1) and 351 of the Indian Constitution, the eighth schedule includes the recognition of 22 languages.
Why do you give so much importance to Hindi language only?
