The world’s tallest statue of Lord Murugan, 146 feet high, has been unveiled at Puthiragoundampalayam in the Salem district of Tamil Nadu. The idol, located at the Sri Muthumalai Murugan Temple in Ethapur on the Salem-Chennai National Highway, was dedicated on Wednesday and devotees were allowed to darshan.
Natarajan Sridhar, chairman of the Sri Muthumalai Murugan Foundation, which built the statue, said it took about 6 years to complete the construction. The statue of Lord Murugan(140 feet) in Malaysia (near the Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur) was considered the tallest statue in the world. But now it is the tallest statue in our country. We started the work of setting up the statue in 2016. We got engaged to Thiruvarur Thiagarajan, the same sculptor who built the Murugan temple in Malaysia in 2006” he said. The temple authorities showered rose petals on the statue from a helicopter.
The statue breaks the record of the Murugan statue near Batu caves in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur, which was also built by the same sculptor
