When Rajinikanth was considered for the role of Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan by Jayalalitha and Sivaji Ganesan
Former chief minister Jayalalithaa once responded to a reader’s query in Kumutham Magazine. One guy had inquired about her preference for Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan in the event that Ponniyin Selvan was turned into a movie. Rajinikanth was the only word in her response, claims Rajinikanth.
Even Sivaji Ganesan, according to Kamal Haasan, wanted Rajinikanth to play Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan.

“I requested a makeup artist when I got back from Bombay. Just wear foundation, they advised. The costume then appeared. Both the shirt and the pants were baggy. What is this, I thought. Shobana was in the first scene. She kind of bullies. She made fun of me by telling me that Kamal would take my place in the movie. It was challenging to act in the movie. I had a set of stock expressions for the movie, similar to stock photos. I had some love and some emotion. Mani declined all offers (laughs). He was requesting my emotions. What am I feeling, I wondered. I then called Kamal and told him that acting around this man is really difficult (Mani Ratnam).
I knew this would happen, Kamal claimed. He advised me to simply mimic Mani’s actions by asking him to act. It succeeded. Thank you, Kamal.

“This incident has three heroes. Producer Subaskaran is first, followed by Mani Ratnam and actress Kalki. Like theatregoers waiting for tickets, people were waiting for the magazine. I once questioned why this book series was never adapted into a movie. I believe it might be because the part 1 part 2 trend did not exist back then. That might be the cause. Rajinikanth predicts that this movie will become a milestone in Indian cinema.

“I’m not sure where to start. I’ve discussed the movie a lot with Mani Ratnam. That in and of itself is a unique tale. When I went and asked, he told me the story about MGR. And he instructed me to start the movie right away. Back then, I didn’t understand why. The book became publicly available. I felt awful about it. I often wondered if Mani or I would create something akin to Ponniyin Selvan. I attempted but failed. But Mani has always had this dream. This movie will do well. Kama Haasan declares, “And I’m glad I’m a part of it.
