Secret Invasion Episode 5 marks a notable improvement from the previous week’s part, though there’s an underlying feeling of emptiness and futility in the current narrative. As a once-devoted Secret Invasion enthusiast, the concept had the potential for a grand MCU movie event, envisioning one of Earth’s mightiest heroes orchestrating a planet-wide infiltration and annihilation of mankind.
However, the story has been confined to the realm of Disney+ and Episode 4 disappointed with weak plot twists and character deaths, leaving much to be desired. On the positive side, Episode 5 brings an increase in action and violence, capturing a sense of ruthlessness that keeps viewers engaged. Nevertheless, with the series drawing to a close, one can’t help but question the overall purpose of the narrative.
In Episode 5, the plan of Gravik, the main antagonist, undergoes a significant change. After an ambush on President Ritson’s convoy in the previous episode, tensions rise among the Skrulls in New Skrullos. Gravik takes decisive and brutal actions against dissenting members, showcasing his dominance and instilling fear among his ranks.
The narrative also explores the conflict between Fury and Rhodey, a Skrull posing as him. Fury confronts Rhodey, threatening to reveal his true identity, but Rhodey counters by blackmailing Fury with footage of a fabricated crime. This exchange intensifies the stakes for both characters.
The episode also features Sonya’s relentless pursuit of the Super-Skrull machine’s whereabouts, displaying her unyielding determination and adding a darker tone to the MCU.
As the episode progresses, Gravik puts forth his demands to Fury, setting up a tradeoff that could have immense consequences. Millions of lives could be spared if Fury retrieves the Harvest, a collection of Avengers’ DNA, for Gravik. However, doing so would also empower Gravik and potentially jeopardize the world.
The episode builds tension and momentum, leaving viewers eager for a thrilling conclusion. Yet, with one episode left, there’s a sense that the story needs a significant twist or revelation to truly deliver on its promise.
Overall, Secret Invasion Episode 5 earns a solid score of 3/5. The increased action and momentum make for an engaging watch, but the series needs a compelling ending to make the entire journey feel worthwhile.
Secret Invasion Episode 5 review score: 3.5/5
