Why has The Marvels become MCU’s most disliked YouTube video?
On April 11, 2023, the first trailer for Marvel’s next movie The Marvels was published. In less than a week, it has already surpassed all other studio YouTube videos in dislikes. The teaser for the movie Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau, and Kamal Khan, starring Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Iman Vellani, has a staggering 623,000 dislikes.
Misogyny is reportedly one of the primary causes of the backlash and hate ratio. Male superhero fans, who predominate in the Marvel Universe, never seem to take to female-focused movies well. Larson, who has called for more female representation in the often male-dominated superhero movies, has previously faced criticism from the same group.
This segment of the male audience thinks that widespread spamming and trolling may harm the prospects and future of female-led superhero movies. Prior to Captain Marvel’s debut, Rotten Tomatoes had to modify its rules to stop these trolls from flooding the site with unfavourable scores and reviews. It received flak for being the first superhero movie with a sole female lead in the well-known superhero world.
She-Hulk: Attorney At Law was the MCU trailer that received the most negative feedback prior to The Marvels. The movie, which came out in May 2022, also included female superheroes. Surprising? Actually, no. During Captain Marvel’s run, the sexist fanboys had launched an extensive campaign of hatred, saying that the MCU did not require a female-led superhero film. Even before She-Hulk was made available on Disney+, they panned its reviews.
