The news that renowned actress Jamuna had passed away shocked Tollywood celebrities and movie fans on Friday.
Before retiring, the vivacious diva appeared in a number of Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Hindi films. She passed away at home from age-related ailments. The actress was born Jana Bai in August 1936 in Hampi, but her family later relocated to Duggirala, Guntur, where she was raised. She made her acting debut in 1953 with Garikapati Rajarao’s Puttillu at the age of about 15 or 16. However, she had a breakthrough in 1955 when she starred in LV Prasad’s Missamma.
She also received a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress when she stepped into Hindi cinema and repeated her role from the 1964 film Mooga Manasulu in the 1967 adaptation Milan. Jamuna would later join politics in the 1980s. With movies like Gundamma Katha, Dorikithe Dongalu, Srimanthudu, and others, Jamuna’s legacy will endure forever. Although she had a distinguished profession, she was also well-known for her relationship with the late Savitri.
During her theatrical performances in Duggirala, Savitri had stayed at Jamuna’s house. When Jamuna later shown interest in performing, she invited her to appear in movies. But Jamuna gave it all up when she wed zoology professor Professor Juluri Ramana Rao in 1965. They had a contented and joyful existence up to his 2014 cardiac arrest death. Jamuna is now survived by her daughter Sravanthi and son Vamsee.
